The Software Engineering Professional helps deliver BT’s software engineering strategy and roadmap in line with BT’s commercial goals. You will develop cloud-native applications, working in a fixed-capacity squad to build and support apps, driving innovation and engineering excellence.

What you’ll be doing

  • Implement technical solutions for colleagues and customers, resolving inter-system issues within cross-functional squads.
  • Contribute to technical decisions, technology choices, and architecture across high-performance products and platforms, balancing short-term impact with long-term transformation.
  • Design and develop software in line with wider architecture and security standards.
  • Undertake technical reviews and keep skills current with software engineering principles and practices.
  • Help design technical specifications and develop software for smaller or less complex initiatives, contributing to delivery quality.
  • Write, test, and review code under supervision, communicating clearly with engineering colleagues.
  • Integrate existing software products and solve routine compatibility problems.
  • Monitor systems and correct software defects.
  • Support high-quality tooling and automation for continuous delivery and developer productivity.
  • Contribute to an ambitious technical roadmap for the business, engineering, and partner teams.
  • Assist with engineering and operational excellence initiatives, including metrics and continuous improvement.
  • Identify and implement ways to improve software engineering processes.
  • Design and develop components of Digital’s strategic platforms.
  • Collaborate to deliver features to internal customers via cloud product suites.
  • Unblock customer issues in the cloud when needed.
  • Work closely with security and compliance to ensure everything delivered is fit for purpose.
  • Evangelise cloud-first and solid software engineering principles with stakeholders.

Skills and experience

  • Understanding of HR functions in a global corporate organisation, including how local HR legislation impacts systems and processes.
  • Experience working end-to-end across a service delivery value chain.
  • Excellent organisation and time management.
  • Clear thinker with vision, passion, and energy, with strong attention to detail.
  • In-depth knowledge of HR SaaS solutions.
  • Strong documentation and written communication skills (e.g., workbook updates, creating support tickets).
  • Experience gathering requirements and driving true SaaS adoption.
  • Understanding of basic XML concepts, system development, and testing.
  • Understanding of GUI configuration items such as radio buttons and pick lists.
  • Working knowledge of run-team tools such as ticketing and testing platforms.
  • Practical experience with Agile methodology and Agile development.
