Why This Role Matters
This role sits at the heart of BT’s Broadband Authentication and Data platforms, providing software solution engineering capability across the evolution and ongoing management of national critical infrastructure.
You will work closely with stakeholders across BT to deliver reliable, secure, and scalable platforms that underpin broadband and hybrid services for around 10 million customers.
The Broadband Data and Authentication team brings together design, development, and testing to maintain secure platforms while continuously delivering new features and products. The team works in an Agile and Scrum model as part of the Broadband ISP Tribe, closely aligned with SRE and DevOps practices.
These platforms generate critical service data used for cyber defence, capacity planning, network management, and quality of service analysis. The team is actively transforming these systems using modern cloud technologies, with automation and data at the core.
What You’ll Be Doing

Lead execution of the engineering strategy, ensuring high-quality delivery on time and within budget

Make complex technical decisions, selecting technologies and designing architectures that balance short-term needs with long-term transformation

Contribute to an ambitious technical roadmap aligned with business priorities and engineering goals

Solve complex and strategic technical problems, including work in untested technologies and large-scale platforms

Drive engineering and operational excellence through clear metrics and continuous improvement
-
Foster a strong engineering culture focused on innovation, predictability, and reliability

Write, test, and review production-quality code, independently handling complex technical challenges

Mentor software engineers and support technical growth across the team

Champion emerging trends and best practices in software engineering

Coach teams to improve efficiency and delivery using agile tools and methodologies

Manage key stakeholders and deliver critical projects with real customer impact

What You’ll Bring
Mandatory Experience
-
Proven experience in software solution development using Ruby, Python, Java, or similar languages
-
Hands-on full-stack development experience combined with DevOps practices
-
Experience leading end-to-end technical delivery of large, complex projects with multiple stakeholders

Strong understanding of CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, and multi-environment deployments
-
Solid experience with test design, debugging, and root cause analysis
-
Proven track record of automated testing for web and backend applications
-
Experience working with cloud platforms and services
-
Strong capability with Infrastructure as Code tools and approaches
-
Ability to resolve complex technical issues using deep technical knowledge

Effective stakeholder management skills

Demonstrated leadership and mentoring experience
Nice to Have

Experience with Docker, docker-compose, and Kubernetes

Test-Driven Development and Behaviour-Driven Development practices

Experience using Robot Framework, Playwright, Selenium, or similar tools

Exposure to AWS or GCP

OpenStack ecosystem experience

Monitoring tools such as Monit, Telegraf, Prometheus
